Dr. Hans Selvog has spent the past thirty years of his professional life as a forensic social worker, focusing on sentencing advocacy and mitigation development. For much of this same period, he has also been a clinician delivering direct therapeutic services. For the past twenty years, he has provided capital mitigation assistance in hundreds of death penalty cases. Dr. Selvog’s most significant experience in the death penalty field as a forensic social worker was his involvement in Wiggins v. Smith (6/26/03 – see http://www.law.cornell.edu/supct /pdf/02-311P.ZO. The Honorable Sandra Day O’Connor wrote the 7-2 majority opinion in which Dr. Selvog’s work was cited throughout). Dr. Selvog has engaged in sentencing evaluation at the local, state and federal levels from pretrial preparation in death penalty cases and sentencing preparation in non-capital felony offenses to capital post-conviction matters of appeal, habeas corpus, and clemency.  He has testified and qualified as an expert numerous times.  In addition, his clinical work has addressed substance abuse, chronic mental illness and mental retardation in addition to violence and sexual offense behavior problems.  He has also conducted couples/relationship counseling and family therapy with parents of teenagers who have been involved in juvenile delinquency.
